What is an IBAN Number?

IBAN stands for International Bank Account Number. It is an internationally standardized format for bank account numbers used throughout Europe and many other countries. An IBAN makes international payments easier and more secure.

How is an IBAN Structured?

  • Country Code - The first 2 letters indicate the country (NL for Netherlands)
  • Check Digits - 2 digits for error detection (MOD-97 algorithm)
  • Bank Code - 4 letters identifying the bank (e.g. ABNA for ABN AMRO)
  • Account Number - The remaining part is your personal account number

IBAN Validation: How Does It Work?

IBAN validation uses the MOD-97 algorithm (ISO 13616). The check digits are moved to the end, letters are converted to numbers, and the result is divided by 97. If the remainder is 1, the IBAN is valid. Our tool performs this calculation entirely in your browser.
